Student Scholarships

The Westfield Foundation proudly supports the students of Westfield and surrounding communities with numerous scholarships, established by community members benefiting elementary through high school students.

The Westfield Foundation offers a scholarship to graduating high school seniors who are residents of Westfield,   the Westfield Foundation Clarence H. and Florence Horn Van Dellen Memorial Scholarship.  The Scholarship is $5,000 a year for four years totaling $20,000, distributed as: one $5,000 scholarship for each of four years, or two $2,500 scholarships for each of four years.  The selection criteria for the scholarship are: Community Service, Academic Achievement (top 25% of class), Character, Financial Need and Leadership.  The scholarship application is available at the Westfield High School, Counseling Department page,  website www.westfieldnjk12.org.  Applications should be returned to the Westfield High School Guidance Department, 550 Dorian Road, Westfield, NJ 07090 by April 12 of senior year, for qualifying applicants.

Westfield High Students are recipients of various other scholarships established with the Foundation. Below is a listing of these scholarships and the most recent recipients:

Charles Addams Memorial Art Scholarship Fund   (Established 1992)   This fund was established by Ron MacCloskey and friends to recognize the comic genius of former resident and cartoonist Charles Addams.  The income from the fund is used annually for a scholarship to a Westfield High School graduate who intends to further his or her education in art.  Selected by the Westfield High School Fine Arts Department.  Asher Horowitz (2013); Jessica Fang (2012); Charlie Herrington (2011);

Bob and Marge Brewster Scholarship Fund (Established 1999)  A fund established by the children of Bob and Marge Brewster.  Income from this fund will be granted to the Westfield School Boosters Association to be used by them in their ongoing scholarship awards program. Liam Devin (2013)

Madeleine Wild Bristol Fund   (Established 1990)  A fund started in memory of Madeleine Wild Bristol. Robert L. and Marilyn P. Bunting Scholarship Fund (Established 2005)  A scholarship fund to benefit a graduating senior at Westfield High School, established in memory of Robert L. The Matthew C. Cahill Memorial Fund (Established 2010)  A fund established by the family and friends of Matthew Cahill, who died at the age of 28.  Matthew was a celebrated swimmer and tri-captain of the Westfield High School Boys Public A State Championship Team.  A scholarship will be awarded annually to a graduating senior member of the Westfield High School swim team.  Connor Moore (2013); Richard O’Connor (2012); Jack Lorentzen (2011)

Kevin M. Clabby Memorial Fund  (Established 1984)    This fund was established in memory of Kevin M. Clabby who was an Edison Intermediate School student.  The income is used to pay annually an award to a student nominated by the 8th grade teachers of Edison Intermediate School and selected by the 8th grade Guidance Counselor and the Principal of Edison.

Class of ’57 Fund  (Established 2006)  A scholarship fund established by David Haworth and his classmates, all members of the Westfield High School Class of 1957, on their 50th anniversary, to contribute annually to the Westfield High School Distinguished Teacher Award and to the Foose Award, which is named for Robert L. Foose and is presented to a member of the WHS administration, staff or faculty with nominations by the faculty, students and staff.  Mr. Foose was the Principal of Westfield High School in 1957. J. Isabella Dodds Fund   (Established 1994)  The fund was established by Mr. and Mrs. Charles Hansen.  Mr. Hansen is a former student of Ms. Dodds, who was a guidance counselor at Westfield High School  in the 1940′s.  Income from the fund and the principal, if necessary, is paid as an annual scholarship of $5,000 to a graduating senior of Westfield High School selected by a committee from the school and the donor. Edmund K. Faltermayer Scholarship Fund (Established 2003)  A fund established by the family and friends of the late Edmund K. Faltermayer, a noted journalist and writer.  The fund provides an annual scholarship to a journalism student at Westfield High School.  Jennifer Mandelblatt (2013)Abigail Goldring (2012); Neil Haggerty (2011);

Robert and Linda Foose Memorial Fund   (Established 1985)  This fund was given by the children and friends of Robert Foose and Linda Foose.  Robert Foose was the Principal of Westfield High School and Linda Foose was a teacher.  Income from the fund is provided to a member of the Westfield High School administration, faculty or staff for his/her contribution to the educational process. Charles H. Frankenbach Sr. Memorial Scholarship Fund   (Established 1988)  This fund was established by Charles H. Frankenbach Jr. and Theodore F. Frankenbach in memory of their father.  The income from the fund is used for scholarships to persons nominated by the Guidance Department of the Westfield High School.  Max Bohall (2013)Richard O’Connor (2012)

Tomas Garcia Memorial Scholarship Fund   (Established 1995)  Net income is used to provide an annual award to one or two students of Edison Intermediate School who personifies the admirable traits of Tomas Garcia – a positive mental attitude, a sense of humor, trustworthiness, friendliness, bravery, and a love of learning and athletics. William E. and Chester S. Gerdes Memorial Scholarship Fund  (Established 2002)  Funded by a bequest under the Will of Chester S. Gerdes, this fund provides an annual college scholarship to a resident of Westfield.  Applicants are screened by the Westfield Rotary Club.  Liam Collins (2013); nSarah Chandler (2012)

David M. Hart Science Scholarship Fund   (Established 1994)  The income from this fund is to be used to provide an annual  US Savings Bond for a graduating senior from the Westfield High School who has demonstrated high interest in natural or environmental science, has a B average, has been accepted into a four year college program, and has demonstrated good moral character and ethical values.  Selected by Westfield High School. Keith S. Hertell II Memorial Scholarship Fund   (Established 1997)  A fund established by the family and friends of Keith S. Hertell, II, to provide scholarship funding in his memory for a graduating senior of Westfield High School.

Waldron W. Holck Memorial Scholarship Fund   (Established 1995)  A fund established by family and friends in memory of Waldron W. Holck, the net income from this fund provides an annual scholarship award of $600 to a graduating senior of Westfield High School intending to further his/her education at a trade or technical school.  Selected by Westfield High School. Nelson A. Keller Memorial Fund   (Established 1985)   This fund was set up by family and friends of Nelson A. Keller, a music teacher in Westfield for many years.  Income from the fund is designated for awards to Roosevelt Intermediate School students for furthering their musical education, specifically in the study of trumpet or violin. Megan Kelley Memorial Scholarship Fund   (Established 1990)   A fund established by Mr. and Mrs. Terrence Gilbert Kelley in memory of their daughter Megan.  Net income from the fund is paid to the Westfield School Boosters Association for a scholarship for an athlete from the senior class of Westfield High School.

Westfield Lacrosse Club Fund  (Established 1998)  Net income from the fund is paid to the Westfield School Boosters Association for a scholarship for an athlete from the senior class of Westfield High School. Courtney Weisse (2013)

Joel B. Langholtz Memorial Fund   (Established 1981)  This fund was established by the PTO of Tamaques School in memory of Joel B. Langholtz, a Principal at Tamaques School.  Income from the fund is used for scholarships to persons nominated by the Westfield High School Guidance Department and approved by the Tamaques School PTO.  Marissa Boretz (2011)

Steven L. Lapidus Scholarship Fund (Established 1999)   A fund established by friends and family of Steven L. Lapidus.  Mr. Lapidus was one of New Jersey’s top First Amendment litigators, who specialized in public access fights for public records and was an outstanding advocate for the interests of the public.  Income from the fund will provide scholarship funding for a student or students of Westfield High School.  Selected by Westfield High School. Peggy and Jeremiah A. Lott Scholarship Fund  (Established 2000)  This fund was established by Jeremiah Lott, a former Foundation trustee (1987 – 1993) in memory of his wife, Peggy.  The fund provides an annual scholarship to a graduate of Westfield High School, with preference given to students who meet the criteria of academic performance, character and need, who will study at the Randolph Macon Women’s College, the Massachusetts Institute of Technology or those pursuing the fields of psychology, chemical or biological engineering and medicine.  Selected by Westfield High School.  Colleen Gallagher (2013)Victoria Wang (2012);  John Gentile (2011)

Edith MacCormack Memorial Fund   (Established 1982)  This fund was established by the family and friends of Edith MacCormack, a Westfield resident and teacher at Linden High School.  Income from the fund provides an award for the highest ranked senior in English in Linden High School. Jean M. McDermott Fine Arts Scholarship Fund (Established 2008)  A scholarship fund established by the friends and family of Jean M. McDermott to recognize and honor her contributions to the Fine Arts education in the Westfield school system.  Selected by Westfield High School.  Emma Tabachnick (2013); Brandon Vassallo and Mary Barber (2012); Garrett Verdone (2011)

Helen Bell and John S. McMartin Memorial Scholarship Endowment Fund (Established 1998)  A fund established by the Will of Helen Bell McMartin and added to by bequest from John S. McMartin upon his death in 2003. Income from this fund provides an annual scholarship to a graduating senior from Westfield High School.  The recipient of this award will be chosen by the Westfield High School Guidance Department based upon need, academic merit and character.  Sun Park and Courtney Han (2013); Nicole Embrett and Nicholas Knepper (2012); Alyssa Hatch (2011)

Lisa K. Monteleone Scholarship Fund   (Established 1995)  A scholarship fund established in memory of Lisa K. Monteleone, who taught at Westfield High School. Income from the fund provides a scholarship annually to a graduating senior of Westfield High School who is an outstanding English student, has expressed an interest in teaching and has been actively involved in school or community outreach programs.   Selected by Westfield High School. Vida Evans Nogi Memorial Scholarship Fund    (Established 1994)  A fund established by Leslie Nogi Luminati and friends in memory of Vida Evans Nogi, who was an English teacher at Linden High School from 1944 to 1964 and subsequently Supervisor of Language Arts until her retirement in 1975.  Net income is paid annually as a scholarship to a Linden High School senior who has demonstrated excellence in the study of English with a stated desire to pursue a career in education.  Megan Bordonaro (2012)

Douglas F. Odenkirk Memorial Scholarship Fund   (Established 1994)   This fund was established by Mr. and Mrs. William D. Odenkirk in memory of their son Douglas F. Odenkirk. The income from this fund is for a scholarship for a Westfield High School senior, either in the special education program or one who continues his or her education in a vocational, business or trade school.   Selected by Westfield High School.  Brittany De Nicola (2013); Ellen Walsh (2011); Alexander Caggiano (2012)

Robert M. Read & Winifred M. Read Law Scholarship Fund   (Est. 1987)  This fund was set up by Robert M. and Winifred M. Read. After the addition of 10% of income to the principal, the balance of the income is paid in scholarships to a student or students enrolled in accredited law schools who are residents of Westfield or Plainfield or who attend Fordham Law School.  Applicants are screened by the Westfield Rotary Club.  Christina Obiajulu (2013); Kathryn Fazio (2012)

Linda Read Memorial Fund (Established 1991)  This fund was established by Mr. and Mrs. Robert M. Read in memory of their daughter Linda.  Income from the fund is used to provide scholarships awarded to students who are candidates for either undergraduate degrees in nursing or graduate degrees in nursing or medicine.  Scholarship winners are chosen by the Westfield Rotary Club.  Jimmy Yang, Kristen Troutman and Katelyn Kelly (2013).

Mandeville Rentrop Memorial Scholarship Fund  (Established 2005)  This memorial fund was established in memory of Mandeville Rentrop by friends and family.  The fund will provide an annual award to a graduate of Westfield High School.  Selected by Westfield High School. Drude Sparre Roessler Music Scholarship Fund (Established 2007) A fund established by Drude Roessler to recognize excellence in vocal performance by a Westfield public school student.  The award will be presented to a fifth grade student in the All-City Chorus, chosen by the Westfield Fine Arts Department, more specifically by the elementary vocal music teachers. Joseph E. Rood Memorial Scholarship Fund   (Established 1984)   This fund was established by friends and associates of Joseph E. Rood, to honor his memory by assisting a student at Westfield High School in pursuing a college education.  Income from the fund is given as a scholarship to a senior in the high school from a single parent home who is nominated by the Westfield High School Guidance Department.  Jade Tankard (2013); Katherine Nemeth (2012); Morgan Bungerz (2011);

Greta Schoenemann Memorial Scholarship Fund (Established 2003)  This memorial fund was established to honor the memory of Greta Schoenemann, a Westfield High School student who died in a tragic accident her freshman year of high school.  The scholarship is awarded by the westfield School Boosters Association to a senior girls soccer player about whom it can best be said “she was a great teammate.” Jessica Kenny (2013)

Khalid Shahid Memorial Scholarship Fund  (Established 2001)  Established by the family and friends of Khalid Shahid who was killed on September 11, 2001, this fund provides an annual scholarship to a graduate or graduates of Union High School.

Rachel Mather Sullivan Scholarship Fund (Established 2004)  Established by the daughters of Rachel Mather Sullivan, a long time resident of Westfield and an art teacher and supervisor in the Westfield public schools from 1944-1976.  This fund provides an annual award to a graduate of Westfield High School who intends to pursue the study of art.  Selected by the Westfield High School Fine Arts Department.  John Campbell (2013); Emily Miller (2012);Cheryl Wu and Meghan Jenkins (2011);

Justina V. Taylor Memorial Scholarship Fund   (Established 1996)  A fund established by the Will of Justina V. Taylor, a long-time resident of Westfield.  Income from this fund provides scholarship monies for deserving Westfield High School graduates intending to further their education.  Selected by Westfield High School. Noel A. and Thelma C. Taylor Memorial Scholarship Fund   (Established 1989)  This fund was originally established by Noel A. Taylor and friends in memory of his wife Thelma C. Taylor, a teacher in the Westfield High School. Upon the death of Noel A. Taylor, his son established the Noel A. and Thelma C. Taylor Fund.  Net income from the fund provides a scholarship to a graduating senior who intends to further his or her education in the study of science or literature.  Selected by Westfield High School.  Jason Qin (2012); Emma Partridge (2011)

Liesja Tortorello Memorial Scholarship Fund  (Established 1998)  A fund established in memory of Liesja Tortorello by friends and family, this fund provides an annual scholarship to a graduating senior of Westfield High School who exemplifies the motto of “Carpe Diem” – “seize the day!”  Funding may also be provided for periodic grants, based upon the donor’s request.  Selected by Westfield High School. Gail W. Trimble Memorial Scholarship Fund   (Established 1988)   This fund was established in memory of Gail W. Trimble, a former editor of the Westfield Leader, by her children and friends.  Income from the fund is used for annual scholarships to Westfield High School students intending to further their education in journalism.  Selected by Westfield High School.  Jessica Ciampa (2013); Tyler Varian and Bernadette Hopen (2012); Casey Federbusch and Katherine McKinley (2011);

Clarence H. and Florence H. VanDellen Memorial Fund (Established 2003)  A fund established by a bequest under the Will of Florence Van Dellen, a long time teacher in the Westfield schools.  The fund awards a four-year scholarship to a resident or residents  of Westfield who needs and is deserving of financial aid for college.  Applicants are screened by the Westfield High School guidance department and selected by the Westfield Foundation scholarship committee. Ruth V. Vincent Memorial Scholarship Fund   (Established 1986)  This scholarship fund was established in memory of Ruth V. Vincent, a supervisor of music for the Westfield Public Schools for many years and the guiding light in introducing instrumental music lessons in the elementary schools.  Income from the fund is awarded annually as a scholarship to a student in the 6th grade of Westfield public schools who has demonstrated an ability to play in the All-City Band or Orchestra. Charles F. and Florence M. Wallace Fund   (Established 1981)  A fund established initially by the Wallace family as the Westfield-Wallace Fund.  The source of the original fund was the Wallace & Tiernan Company.  Consideration is given, in making grants, to the needs of organizations previously supported by the Westfield-Wallace Fund, to addressing new  and compelling  community needs, and to supporting innovative programs. This fund annually provides $35,000 to the Westfield Rotary Club for scholarships. Kevin Ingram and Thomas Wolski (2012)

Mary Kay Wanchik Fine Arts Scholarship Fund  (Established 2000) Established by John J. Pak in loving memory of his friend, Mary Kay Wanchik, this fund awards a scholarship to a graduating senior or seniors of Linden High School.  Candidates to be considered must have participated, on or off stage, in at least two musical productions at the high school.

W. Earl and Helen W. Wyman Scholarship  Fund   (Established 1995)  Income from this fund provides an annual scholarship award to a graduating senior of Westfield High School who will continue his/her education at a licensed vocational/technical school or at an accredited two or four year college.  Selected by Westfield High School and members of the family.  Jennifer Amador (2013); Matias Werner (2012); Madison Mone (2011);
